Did I stay up until ungodly hours last night reading this because I just couldn’t put it down? Yes. Did I have a nice little cry afterwards because I see so much of myself in the train wreck that is Frances or because I was painfully sleep deprived and delirious? We may never know 🤷🏾♀️ In all seriousness, I’m so happy I decided to reread this because I appreciated it so much more this time. Rooney’s work is undeniably not for everyone and despite how much I loved this, it’s not a book that I would recommend widely. If you like books where the characters are driven by the plot rather than plot being written by the characters, you will definitely not have a good time with Sally Rooney. I’ve seen so many people say how boring this plot and these characters are, and they really aren’t entirely wrong. But I find the Rooney’s books to be so special because although it may seem mundane, there’s so much emotional complexity and depth wrapped up in these characters and the inevitable complications of their interweaving relationships. I really don’t know how to put into words how connected I feel to these characters, but this book just really means a lot to me. Now it’s time to break my heart again with Normal People.
