THE MAIDENS // Alex Michaelides This was one of my most anticipated thrillers of 2021 so I was overjoyed to be able to get my hands on a galley. Thank you so much @celadonbooks for the gifted copy. 🙏🏾 Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to everything I wanted it to be. This is definitely a solid thriller in my opinion, but it just wasn’t what I had hoped for following a book like THE SILENT PATIENT. I know, The Silent Patient wasn’t everyone’s thing, but it was so well done to me. The premise alone held so much intrigue and from the first page, I was completely engulfed in the story. However, one of the biggest hurdles of this book, for me, was the lack of intrigue and tension. I don’t think the mystery felt that important for a bulk of the plot. Mariana, the MC, seems too far removed from the situation that draws her to Cambridge in the first place, and as a result, the extent of her involvement tends to feel forced. In fact, the mystery surrounding Fosca and The Maidens comes off more as a subplot to the Marianna’s grief. By the end, I think it all comes together well enough, but it’s not seamless. I was so ready for all the dark academica and sinister secret society/ cult vibes, but it just didn’t fulfill that for me. All in all, this was a solid read. Not amazing, and definitely not as captivating as THE SILENT PATIENT, but is still a fun ride. This one is out tomorrow! If you’ve had a chance to read this one already, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
