✨Review✨The Maidens ~ Alex Michaelides Pretentious academics, a murder, the author of The Silent Patient? That’s a book I’ll sign up for and was one of my most anticipated releases for 2021. The Maidens follows Mariana as she tries to figure out who killed her niece Zoe’s friend. Why you ask? Good question. I don’t really know. I did like this (a solid 3.75 stars), it served its purpose for a page turning thriller amidst another Melbourne lockdown, and I will absolutely read anything that Michaelides writes next. In saying that though, a couple of things… I think it’s odd that Michaelides writes so much about mental illness (main character here again is a therapist) but does so in a somewhat stereotypical manner; boundary overstepping and manipulative clients, making everything about daddy issues rather than making grown men take action for their shitty behaviour. At times the Greek myth is over explained, the references to Mariana’s Dad are odd and don’t add to the story in any meaningful way. I did a casual buddy read with @brodiesbookshelf and we had kind of the same thoughts on this, except I had loved The Silent Patient and Brodie not so much. We figured out half the twist, and the other half I was a bit suss on but there was still a shock value. I think what’s happened here is that it’s the tough second novel. It was always going to be hard to follow up, and I think it does absolutely stand on it’s own as a super entertaining and page turning thriller. It’s a bit slow at points, but with short chapters I always wanted to pick it up. And I ended up reading 160pages in one go because I just had to know what happened. I can see it being a movie. And I’m sure it will be turned into one! Happy Publication Day!! Big thankyou to @hachetteaus for my copy, I just about fell off my chair when I opened it. A good one for fellow Melburnians if you need a way to disconnect for the next couple of days and escape into Greek myth and the academy. You can all go grab a copy now 🥳 And on a completely unrelated note, these @bondsaus bed socks are heaven on your feet. I’ll never wear anything else again 🧦
