✨Review✨Wordslut ~ Amanda Montell There are three things you may not know about me 1. When I was 9 or 10 I got given a dictionary for Christmas and I used to read it like it was a novel. Consequently as a kid I knew a lot of meanings of words but not the right context to use them. This still plagues me 17 years later. 2. I have a favourite word. It’s facetious. I use it too often, ask any of my friends. 3. I want to be a speech pathologist. Have for nearly two years. Unfortunately I’m doing a PhD in psychology. Maybe in another life. Anyway I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! Its made me want to quit my PhD and go start a masters in speech or linguistics or anything where I get to learn about words, talking, and the history of words. Hello I am now identity crisis embodied. I loved the combination of research and personal anecdotes from @amanda _montell . It was written so accessibly and covered gender and language in such a stunning way. The way the book was also grouped together was well thought out, with it ending on a note about what linguists think can happen in future around language. If you’ve ever laughed at a teen for the way they talk with new language you’re annoyed you need to go and look up on Urban Dictionary you need to read this. If you’ve ever thought “I could never use they as a person pronoun because it’s grammatically incorrect” you need to read this book (and sort out your phobic ways). If you’ve ever felt embarrassed at the sheer amount you say ‘like’ in a sentence READ THIS BOOK!!!! Some other things covered; catcalling, swearing, sex and gender in language. My only gripe with Wordslut is that there’s no references, or even a bibliography at the back. I would love to do further reading, anyway, there’s only a small portion of the world that would annoy and apparently I’m one of them. Read this book, give it to your friends, and then make them give it to their friends 💃🏼 I’m off on Tuesday to go buy her second book about Cults when it’s released. And I cannot wait!
