✨Review✨The Prince: Faith, Abuse, and George Pell ~ David Marr CW: sexual abuse, pe dophila I saw @readwith _v review this and I am on a rage about the court system and sexual abuse currently so I thought it would be a good one to listen to. I’m going to start this by saying, I went to a catholic high school but I’m not at all religious. Believe what you want to believe, just as long as it doesn’t hurt others. I also want to say that I know a fair bit about George Pell, and the child sex abuse allegations in the Catholic Church and didn’t need the book to make up my mind where I stand on it. If you’re a devout catholic, or just somewhat catholic, or a supporter of Pell, this book probably isn’t for you. Unless you want to feel challenged in your belief system. The book is pretty balanced with what it provides, but I would say it errs on the side of negativity towards the church. Believe survivors and victims always, there’s no way people would make this up for attention. I definitely learned about Pell’s early life and his rise through the church to become Arch Bishop, and also more background into other priests convicted of abuse. I think the thing that shocked me the most was how much the police and governments across the years helped this be covered up. Julia Gillard ordered a Royal Commission into this and I’m glad she did. Victims deserved to be heard if they want to be. One downside to this is it’s quite dense, and there is a bunch of terminology that is related to church and liturgy that sometimes can disrupt the flow if you don’t know what it means. With an audiobook it made it a bit harder to look up to see what they mean so I was left making educated guesses. It’s also full on, requiring your attention at every step of the way. This is a difficult book to read, I found myself furious almost every step of the way. But it’s important. This book was published in 2019, before the High Court of Australia heard Pell’s last attempt at appeal and dropped all the convictions against him. Our court system yet again failed victims of sexual abuse.
