✨Review✨You’re Not Broken ~ Dr Sarah Woodhouse CW: multiple traumas mentioned; not in great detail but they’re there. We know I love talking all things mental health, and for me trauma is a massive part of that. I think we need to get better at talking about the trauma response and this book is absolutely the starting place. I would say if you tried to read The Body Keeps the Score and found it too dense, this would be a wonderful start point before moving back to TBKTS. The book is laid out in three parts; explaining trauma, the impacts on life if can have, and then how to move forward and giving some tools for this. It’s done in a simple and easily accessible manner, and everything is so well researched and referenced. The researcher in me was absolutely living for the references and bibliography 🤓 I will admit I skim read the third part. Mainly because I’m aware of what my triggers are and even just reading some of the tools made me anxious (especially the one about feeling your feelings, I absolutely need to learn this but it’s the hardest thing). I LOVE that she says that you do not have to force yourself to try and do anything in the book, that feeling safe is how we’re going to process these things. What I also loved so much about this book is that she mentions the entire way through it that if you have serious trauma in your life you should see a therapist, and also gives some tips on how to find your best fit. Even though I’m not really the target audience I really learned a lot about the trauma response. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about trauma, anyone who has experienced trauma and wants to learn some ways to manage, or just wants to know more about something your friends might be going through. I found it incredibly validating, but also quite confronting when some things in my life I thought were “other-t” trauma are actually more big t trauma. So if you’re in the same boat, there’s a lot of heavy material, take this one easy. Happy pub day to @thesarahwoodhouse ! Also a big thank you to @penguinbooksaus for sending this #gifted one my way
