I finished this last night! This was the first book that I finished in one day. HAHA. OMG, is this actually for real? (I'm such a slow reader so I'm very proud that I finished this, and on the day that I bought it too HAHAHA. Who am I?) Okay, on to the review. ✨ BOOK REVIEW: I Was Told There’d Be Cake by Sloane Crosley RATING: 🧁🧁 Hmmm. I appreciate this collection of essays - Sloane and her life stories. However, I found myself not really enjoying most of it. I didn't really understand some of the essays, nor did I have the energy to really think about it either. I did enjoy The Ursula Cookie, Bastard Out of Westchester, The Beauty of Strangers and You On a Stick. The Ursula Cookie - okay, if you're a young adult and you find yourself stuck in a job with a boss like Ursula, please leave the moment you feel that it isn't working out (or that maybe she could be a full on witch. HAHA). Time is so precious these days. Don't waste it on people who won't treat you right and with respect. Go get another job. 💛 Bastard Out of Westchester - this made me miss Sydney. So for that, I liked it. The Beauty of Strangers - the title says it all. I'm a sucker for these kind of stories that show the goodness of humanity, even in the strangest way. 😉 You On a Stick - I hope we'll never be Francine. And if ever you're in this kind of situation, please remember that you have the permission to leave. Don't settle for something that you aren't comfortable with. I think I liked this for the comedic reasons (how can you say yes for being a maid of honor for a classmate you had not spoken or seen for more than a decade? and if you're Francine, WHY SLOANE? And if you're Sloane, how can you go on with this??? hahaha) and also for the obvious reasons that sometimes, we are like Sloane - we say yes, even though deeply and sincerely, we want to say no. 🥴 I guess essay collections really are a hit or miss. I'm glad I read this, but sadly I just don't find myself re-reading it ever again. 🥺 So I'm giving this a 2/2.5 stars. #thecozynookreads
