I was inspired by @jennareadsbooks #storySeptember to jump into a few short story collections I’ve had my eye on for a while. I haven’t quite kept up with reading a story a day, but I’ve been making my way through both HER BODY AND OTHER PARTIES by Carmen Maria Machado and A PHOENIX MUST FIRST BURN edited by Patrice Caldwell. Both of these collections are so good! After reading IN A DREAM HOUSE, I knew I had to pick up everything Machado has written and I have not been disappointed. A PHOENIX MUST FIRST BURN is a story collection that explores the Black experience through fantasy and science fiction...yes please! A lot of the stories are more high fantasy than what I’m used to, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it regardless! I thought I’d also take this time to highlight two books that I read around this time last year that I still think about regularly and will probably land on my favorite books of all time list: SALT SLOW and SABRINA & CORINA. If you haven’t read either, I HIGHLY recommend you check them out. Both are just *chef’s kiss*! I also want to throw an honorable mention at FEVER DREAM by Samantha Schweblin! It’s not a short story collection but rather a very short novel. When I first read this book, I didn’t love it, but recognized how powerful and emotive the writing is. It’s been a year since I read it, and to this day, every time I look at the cover, I have a vivid and emotional flashback to reading this story. It’s definitely one of those reads that sucks you in long after reading it. I just picked up LITTLE EYES from my library and I’m dying to get another glimpse into Schweblin’s mind! Do you have a favorite short story author or collection? Feel free to add to my TBR 👇🏾
