the handmaid’s tale ~ margaret atwood “Sanity is a valuable possession; I hoard it the way people once hoarded money. I save it, so that I will have enough, when the time comes” I can’t believe this was published in 1985. I put off reading it because I knew the subject matter would be too real for current times and potentially triggering. But I’m so glad I’ve now read it. The world of Gilead that Atwood creates is extraordinary. The detail in which she writes is greatly appreciated by me because I can’t visualise very well. I also loved that it was mostly in Offred’s thoughts, the lack of punctuation in her thought is something I also liked (I struggle reading long chunks of dialogue). I loved the ambiguity of the ending, although the part before that with the hotel was confusing to me as to why it was there. But overall I liked it more than I thought i would after having put it off for so long and hearing such great things. If you’re in the right space, I can’t recommend enough! read if you like: dystopian futures that turn out like the real world tw: sexual assault, pregnancy
