Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Henny, Happy Saturday or whateva. So last week I started Luster ( @fsgbooks #partner ) and I was immediately invested in this story when I started. TBH I was invested with the entire book periodt! Raven Leilani’s writing is luscious and dazzlingly beautiful just like the cover. Her long and satisfying sentences are crafted to make the reader get these chills while they are making their way through her debut novel. In other words, these surreal sentences augment and lead to having a visceral feeling while reading the story of Edie. Rather than read this book in one sitting, which seems to be a common thing with readers, I extended my experience with this novel on the sole purpose to savor these pleasing sentences. While I absolutely enjoyed my time with this book I do have to admit that there were sections where I honestly got bored and this is due to the fact that this book is mostly set inside the consciousness of its main character. I so desired for more dialogue between the characters in the book and while I do see where Leilani was going with this structure I was lost at times where I wanted to be attentive. But overall, this was a great debut of a new voice in literature that I’m very excited to follow and while it wasn’t a home run for me I still appreciate what Reven Leilani managed to create here with this story. Other than that, have you read Luster? What were your thoughts? Come talk with me, Henny!
