the vanishing half ~ brit bennett “People thought that being one of a kind was what made you special. No, it just made you lonely” I’ve had to sit on what to say about this one for a couple of days. Once I got used to the writing style and the jumping between multiple characters in a chapter I really enjoyed it. It was a great exploration of identity and how certain life choices can lead to very different paths. Stella and Desiree having to make decisions quickly in how they wanted to live their lives really shows what can happen if two very similar people make different choices and how much this can alter life courses. The characters also were so wonderful. I loved Jude, and the relationships she had with Reese, and Kennedy. Identity also plays a big role here as a theme. Both in race, and gender. How all the characters developed, and how their stories intersected was such a pleasure to read. The detail and description was something I really appreciated as well, the care gone into bringing these characters to life is to be admired. Brit Bennett writes wonderfully and I can’t wait to read more of her work. read if you like; slow burn, 1960s America, themes of gender and race identity
