Heyyyyyyyyyyy Henny, Happy Wednesday or whateva! Y’all already know that I’m obsessed with James Baldwin. I have read almost all of his novels and through my journey with his fiction, I’ve learned so much. So when I heard that a nonfiction book was coming out analyzing his life I needed that book in my life immediately. I’m extremely grateful for the people at @crownpublishing @penguinrandomhouse #partner for kindly sending me a finished copy of Begin Again, here is a review: As mentioned this book analyzes the life of one of the most impactful literary American figures in history. There’s no denying that James Baldwin was a writer that was ahead of his time. Through his work, he tackles religion, Black life, race, sexuality, and so much more. Giving us novels and nonfiction work that are so beautifully written and stories that are still as relevant today as when they were first published. In Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lesson for Our Own, Eddie S. Glaude Jr. a professor at Princeton University manages to analyze Baldwin’s life mainly during the Civil Rights Movements and use that analysis to connect it to what is happening in our times. Dr. Glaude exceeds in doing this throughout his book and it’s a great treat that you don’t expect coming. While the main focus is on Baldwin, Dr. Glaude makes sure to have that connection between Baldwin and our current moment. He talks about Trumpism, The Black Lives Matter Movement, police brutality, Obama’s presidency, and other critical moments from the last few years and blends that with Baldwin’s life/work to create a powerful book unlike no other. Additionally, Dr. Glaude also inputs some of his life within his book that helps elevate this work to a different level. Overall, I really enjoyed this one so much. There were so many moments where I had to stop reading to let Dr. Glaude’s ideas set in within me. My book is literally covered with notes. When I enter nonfiction I expect my books to be covered in notes and this one did not disappoint. Dr. Eddie S. Glaude Jr. has snatched my wig and I’m grateful for the work that he has done to provide this important book to America. CONTINUED IN COMMENTS
