Heyyyyyyyyyy Henny, Happy Monday! I hope everyone starts their week on the right foot! Today I want to address this issue of ARCs which I know has been draining this past month. When it comes to ARCs written by Black, Indigenous, Latinx, API, people of color there needs to be some priority set in place for bookstagramers that represent those communities. The publishing industry which is a majorly white industry has had problems of not prioritizing bookstagramers who represent the books that they are publishing. Instead, the publishers send most of their ARCs to the big white accounts ignoring those “ownvoices reviewers.” Now here is where the problem lies within that. The reviews from the big white accounts don’t do these ownvoices books any justice. They tend to give these books bad reviews because “they can’t relate to what’s being written” OR “they feel uncomfortable” OR “it was not their cup of tea.” Not only does this damage the hype around these books but it damages the ratings on Goodreads. If these books were sent out to Own Voices this would likely not happen because these are the stories that represent them. I personally take more value in an Own Voices review than a big white account reviewing the same book (that’s the tea). Additionally, it’s very offensive to see white accounts with the books that own voices have been trying to receive. Here is my solution: Understandably, this a marketing issue. Publishers want the word to spread around their books so that’s why they send most of their ARCs to the big white accounts. But then again these pubs are also lazy to look for own voices reviewers, no tea no shade. My proposition is that when a big account gets an offer for an own voices book they should refer the publishers to own voices bookstagramers who would love the opportunity. I’m not against big white accounts receiving these books because at the end of the day we want these stories to get the attention that they need. But referring the pubs to other bookstagramers helps pubs get these books in the right hands. That’s when you take your privilege and use it for good in this space. I ran out of space 😂 but let me know what you think!
