below deck ~ sophie hardcastle “we choose to breathe. don’t we?” follows oli at three time points in her life. waking up in a boat not knowing how she got there in sydney. the second is her as a crew member to nz. the third as an art curator in london. wow. first off, what beautiful writing. it’s so descriptive as oli and another character describe senses as colours (think synaesthesia). the friendships, and the people she meets and has to deal with that change her life are all somewhat relatable. but the thing that most took me away was how trauma is described. and what the aftermath of trauma is like. by the end i was crying and i was so attached to two of the characters in particular. i think it is really special when an author writes something you don’t want to end and i did not want it to end. i think below deck will be one that sticks with me for a long time. pure magic. (a tw though in the sea monster section, it caught me a bit by surprise so be careful friends) ✨ five stars this is one i will definitely be buying in physical form so i can read it again and have it forever 💙🌊
