Do you have interest in your family history? Do your parents and grandparents pass down stories of your family past to you? Both my parents and in-laws are constantly searching for names to fill in our family tree and learn stories about where we came from. It’s pretty amazing to hear stories of how they found family members and to hear the stories about those people. . I was reading “They Went Left” by Monica Hesse (from my @ParnassusNext box) right when the protests began a couple weeks ago and it definitely impacted my reading experience. So in this review, it’s impossible for me not to connect this book to Black Lives Matter. . Author Hesse said that she wanted to write a book that focused on life after the end of WWII  and the liberation of the concentration camps. We follow Zofia Lederman as she searches for her little brother, who she vowed she would find no matter what, when she finally left the camps. My emotions are always very close to the surface in these stories, but as I read this during the protests, the devastation of how racially targeted killing is still actively happening and it’s happening to children and adults alike hit me so hard. Reading has always helped me connect with people and topics better, and this time my main question was, am I doing all I can to be on the right side of history? Am I actively doing my part to stop a repeating cycle? It’s just another reminder to me to keep checking myself and to keep educating myself and seeking/sharing ways to influence change. . 🧵 “They Went Left” didn’t skimp on harsh reality and this story of Zofia beginning her life again after the war was emotionally devastating. But it was also a tribute to the human spirit and resilience, starting again, and FAMILY. This is the story of the Lederman family and their history and their future. It was a beautifully done story and I highly recommend it. . #theywentleft #monicahesse #historicalfiction #WWIIfiction
