DID YOU KNOW that unlike plants, mushrooms do not require sunlight to make energy for themselves? ✨There are over 30 species of mushrooms that glow in the dark. The bioluminescence produces a glowing light known as foxfire. ✨The largest believed organism in the world is a colony go Armillaria solidipes in Oregon. The fungus is over 2,400 years old and covers some 2,200 acres. I don’t like all mushrooms for eating, but I do love to learn about them. . I recently requested and was gifted “The Way Through The Woods: On Mushrooms and Mourning” by Litt Woon Long from @penguinrandomhouse . This is the story of how the author met her husband, and how his unexpected death after 32 years of marriage set her adrift in her grief. The two of them had always planned on taking a beginner’s mushroom hunting class and so she signed up and was surprised that the pursuit of mushrooms rekindled her zest for life. (More of the synopsis below) . I want to read this for several reasons. 1. I believe that being out in nature without connections to media is one of the fastest ways to find your true self and feel most alive. 2. Years of fairy and Fern Gully loving has always made the idea of mushrooming pretty magical to me. 3. Grief is part of the human experience and I appreciate the lessons I can learn from others who have traveled those paths. . Synopsis: The Way Through the Woods tells the story of parallel journeys: an inner one, through the landscape of mourning, and an outer one, into the fascinating realm of mushrooms—resilient, adaptable, and essential to nature’s cycle of death and rebirth. From idyllic Norwegian forests and urban flower beds to the sandy beaches of Corsica and New York’s Central Park, Woon uncovers an abundance of surprises often hidden in plain sight: salmon-pink Bloody Milk Caps, which ooze red liquid when cut; delectable morels, prized for their earthy yet delicate flavor; and bioluminescent mushrooms that light up the forest at night. #thewaythroughthewoods #littwoonlong
