Do you get along well with your family? I have a super tight relationship with my siblings (there are six of us kids total), but when we do fight (which some of us occasionally still do) it’s more infuriating than a fight with anyone else. But at the end of the day, we always have each others backs. . When I was reading “If You Want To Make God Laugh” it was definitely the sibling relationship between sisters Delilah and Ruth that had me turning pages quickly. Even though our reasons were different, the relationship, the reactions, the judgements, the arguments… SO RELATABLE. Omg, it had me thinking of every situation with my own sisters that left me feeling in similar ways. And while I bounced back and forth between which sister’s side I was on from chapter to chapter, it was so easy to see myself in each woman for one reason or another. . This book is much deeper than the story of sisters. We follow three women in post-Apartheid South Africa who are brought together in each of their darkest times. We follow these characters through a time when civil war is on the horizon and the AIDS epidemic is growing. Zodwa, Delilah, and Ruth are brought together through a series of personal tragedies that end up revolving around the discovery of an abandoned newborn baby. This baby will “challenge their lifelong beliefs about race, motherhood, and the power of the past.” . Author Bianca Marais is from South Africa, and the unapologetic and devastating details of this story felt like getting a dose of reality that I am not familiar with. You’ll find racism between white and black people and their sexualities, what the government and politics were like in the 90s, sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, and much more that made this novel feel almost like a historical fiction to me. I’ve spent some time reading about Apartheid and am grateful for this book to help me get an idea of where to start as I learn more about it. . #ifyouwanttomakegodlaugh #biancamarais #bookreview
