What are you reading today? I’ve got another library find review for you today! “Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore” felt vaguely familiar to me when I saw it, so I figured I must have seen people posting about it years ago. (Pub 2012) I picked it up because I’m basically all in for any book involving a bookstore. . Basically, Clay Jannon finds himself without a job during the recession and finds his way into Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore in San Fransisco on his hunt for a job. But the bookstore ends up being more curious than your regular bookstore. There aren’t a lot of customers, they “check out” the books they come for, and none of the books they take are written in English. So what else do you do when you’re the night shift at a weird book store and your background is in code and computers? You engineer an analysis of the clients behavior and the bookstore and accidentally uncover a secret that is bigger than the bookstore. . Within the first chapter of this book I had laughed out loud twice. I was not expecting the book to take the quirky turn that it did. I guess I was just all set for a contemporary set in a bookstore. Maybe something super heartwarming. But this ended up being super fun and weird and bizarre in a great way. It was also super fun because this book takes place in my neighborhood. We get a lot of talk about Google and their employees, and some of the locations are Mountain View, Palo Alto, and of course, San Fransisco. So it was fun to be able to imagine this all happening in places that I visit daily. This book really did capture the true vibe/culture of a lot of the people who live here and that was part of the charm of the book for me. . I’ve really been enjoying finding some older gems to read, and I think this one would be fun for any book lover who is looking for a quick read, a laugh, maybe works in the tech industry, and something a little unusual. Bonus if you live in California or work for Google, because I think you’ll get that extra layer of fun from it too. . #mrpenumbras24hourbookstore #robinsloan #google #googler #sanfransisco #siliconvalley #bookstore #paloalto #webdevelopers #programmer #technology
