Do you look like someone in your family tree? When my grandma passed away and we were looking through her photographs, it was startling to see that my 22 year old brother has grown to look just like my grandpa, who passed when my mom was young. Same with a friend of mine that showed me a picture of her great grandma and I was like “this line has strong genes cause everyone in your family still looks just like her.” . It is a little comfort to me, in this way, that the ones we love who pass on as actually still very much a part of us. And even if it isn’t by looks, their stories are part of what makes and shape us too— the good and the bad. . Today I’m on the @tlcbooktour to share with you HOW WE DISAPPEARED by Jing-Jing Lee— a story that is drawn from her own family’s experience. This is a novel about human resilience, the bonds of family, and the courage it takes to confront the past. . Synopsis: It is Singapore 1942 and the Japanese troops are coming into Malaysia. A village is ransacked and there are only two survivors and one tiny child. In a neighboring village, 17 year old Wang Di is taken and shipped to a Japanese military brothel where she is forced into sexual slavery as a “comfort woman”. After six years of silence, what she saw and experienced still haunts her. In the year 2000, 12 year old Kevin is sitting beside his ailing grandmother when he overhears a mumbled confession and sets out to discover the truth—setting off a chain of events he could not have foreseen. This story weaves together two time lines and two very big secrets within a very little known point of history, revealing the strength and bravery shown by numerous women in the face of terrible cruelty. (Set in WWII Singapore about women who survived the Japanese occupation — for fans of Pachinko and We Were The Lucky Ones) . #howwedisappeared #hanoversquarepress #historicalfiction #singapore #themoreyouknow #mustread #tlcbooktours #jingjinglee #familyhistory #familytree #japan #WWII #plantsofinstagram #plantstyling #plantaddict #plantsarefriends #plantsplantsplants #booknerdigans #blogtour #amreading #booknerd #bookflatlay #booksbooksbooks
