How many languages do you speak? (I speak English and Portuguese, and understand basic Japanese) But in junior high, when we started taking language classes in school, I very much wanted to take French. (I wasn’t able to because it conflicted with my band classes, so I took German.) . 🇫🇷 Even though I never learned French, I’m still enamored with the way it sounds when spoken— so I did “Enchantee” via audiobook for most of it! (I read from my book for the last several chapters) Magic plus historical fiction = the delightful combination of two of my favorite things. And man did I love all the bones of Enchantée with it’s beautifully writing, interesting magic, wonderful world building, and some really great characters! . Camille was a great character to follow. After the death of her parents, Camille’s brother is lost to alcohol and gambling— so she’s alone in her fight to keep her sister healthy and some semblance of food and shelter going for them. One thing Camille has to her advantage is the minor knowledge of la magie that her mother taught her. Camille, as a magician, uses sorrow to transform scraps of metal to money (or at least the illusion of money, since the enchantment doesn’t last long) Until one day her brother steals all their rent money and Camille enters the gambling houses to win it back. There she learns that she can use her magic to transform more than just scraps of metal— and she starts to think she might have a way to help them make ends meet. . France is on the cusp of the Revolution, and I enjoyed reading about the rising— as well as the way Camille uses her magic as she and her sister navigate their day to day lives. I think my only real complaint about the story is that when it came to the major conflict, it sort of felt out of the blue for me, as I didn’t get any real sense of tension or danger throughout the book. It felt like the wrong people got the worst punishment, too. The whole ending happened very quickly and I wish there had been a greater sense of danger to make the conclusion mean more. But in general, I can see why people are obsessed with this book. I definitely enjoyed it, despite wishing for more from it
