FUN FACT: The belly button is connected to your bladder and, in rare cases, some people are born with a condition that allows them to pee out of their navels. . This fun fact was brought to you by “Gross Anatomy” by Mara Altman. I was gifted this review copy by @putnambooks and didn’t quite know what to think of it until I started reading through it. The aim of this book is that using “a combination of personal anecdotes and research with added elements of science, history, sociology and anthropology, Gross Anatomy holds up a magnifying glass to our beliefs, practices, biases, and grody parts and shows us the naked truth— that there is greatness in our grossness.” . Maybe this is the weirdness of getting older, or having family members that are doctors or PAs who casually toss around body-part/function words or ask questions I used to consider too personal about what is happening with my body (and especially after being pregnant and giving birth) but I’ve started to be more accepting of my body and all the weird and gross things it does. . And reading through "Gross Anatomy” was not only hilarious but I kept finding myself feeling slight shocks whenever she freely admitted something about her body that were immediately followed by this kind of relief that comes from honestly like that. And the surprising thing is that I found it to be exactly my kind of book. As someone who loves laughing, honesty, and information, this was all that. Who decided that women shouldn’t have body hair? How sweaty is too sweaty? Why is the site of “all the grossest bodily functions also one of the most sexualized parts of the human body”? It really made me think about my own insecurities and why they are insecurities. . Anyway, thank you to Putnam for sending this fun book and I think it if you’re looking for a relatable laugh, this might be a good one for you. . #grossanatomydispatchesfromthefrontandback #grossanatomy #maraaltman #memoir #bookreview #bookrecommendation #onthebed #onthebedproject
