What are some book topics/books that have lead you to have constructive conversations and dialogue with friends and community? . For the past week my reading choices were all heavy. While I was reading “People Kill People”, @ursula _uriarte was reading “The Hate U Give” and after all our discussion on it, I knew it was time for me to finally pick it up. Before I was even halfway through THUG, Ursula had finished “Dear Martin” and she really encouraged me to read them back to back and I’m glad she did. While they both address the same topics, they are mostly focused in two different environments and ways to take in information. They complimented each other so well and really rounded out the lessons and questions I had while reading. . What I really loved about Dear Martin was the classroom debate setting where they discussed affirmative action, equality among race, and other prejudices. There were clear questions and clear answers and it felt very direct. I thought it was a great way to challenge ideas and address different mentalities against each other. I really loved the way this book posed questions to readers. . THUG took me into the complicated world of how and why some people end up selling drugs and in gangs and the cycles of our society that cultivate and foster stereotypes. It really gives you the time to sit through a day-in-the-life of a family and community and get a peek into what it’s like. . Bottom line for both these books is that we are talking about the LIVES of PEOPLE. And as a mama, I read through these thinking about how through all the worry I have every day about the safety and well-being of my kid, I have never ever worried that her very skin made her a target. It’s a thought that will rock you. . I’m grateful for the conversations I’ve had with friends this week too. Not all of us had the same beliefs and viewpoints either. I’ve taken some really deep looks at myself and asked a lot of questions, too. Overall recommend both these books for constructive learning and good reading. . #thehateugive #angiethomas #dearmartin #nicstone
