I feel like if someone had said to me, “hey Hikari, “Before She Ignites” has dragons in it” I would have read it much sooner. I received this copy from author Jodi Meadows just before it’s sequel “As She Ascends” was published a few weeks ago, and immediately dove into it because I’d seen it all over my feed. . Even though I feel like we read about a lot of characters with anxiety, somehow Mira felt different to me. It’s a big part of her character and how she responds to everything happening to her. I will admit that I am not used to protagonists like this. I’m used to them powering through their fears or self-doubts pretty quickly, even if those fears and doubts continue to plague them. But Mira’s anxiety is ever present, especially as she is imprisoned after a betrayal by people she thought she could trust. . It was hard to read about Mira in prison until I started thinking of friends in my own life who also deal with anxiety. I could imagine their responses being the same and it made Mira real to me rather than just a book character I wanted to be busting down prison walls instead of suffering a panic attack. . What was really amazing to me was how Meadows writes about being alone in the dark. Man, can she describe a moment. If you’ve ever been in complete darkness before, it’s amazing how she describes it. . It was really in the last couple of chapters, after all the ground work of this world and story had been carefully laid, that I started to get really excited about where this story is going. The way “Before She Ignites” ends has me thinking that “As She Ascends” is going to be pretty action-packed and hopefully full of a lot of the answers that I’m craving after finishing this. Dragons are a normal part of this world, so we do get plenty about dragons here, but I think we’re going to get next level dragon stuff in the following book and I can’t wait. . I honestly can’t wait to get my hands on the second book because I have the sneaking suspicion it’s going to be better than this one. I have the feeling that this series is going to be one of those that just explodes into the finish line and I can’t wait to follow it!
