How much does a book cover influence your choice in picking up a book? I’m laughing now at myself, when I remember that I did not pick up this ARC at BEA on purpose, even though everyone was clamoring to get it. I took one look at that cover, got that weird uncomfortable creeps feeling in my stomach, and knew I wasn’t going to read it. . But then last week I received an ARC in the mail from @getunderlined and I thought, oh what the heck. Then proceeded to speed through a story that may very well in my top ten of 2018. If you have already read “Frankenstein” then I think this will be a delight as you read through and see how author Kiersten White wove these two stories together. (Don’t worry if you haven’t read “Frankenstein”, because I don’t think you need to at all to enjoy this dark tale.) Essentially, you are getting the story of “Frankenstein” from Elizabeth’s point of view, but don’t let that trick you into thinking you know what’s going to happen or how this one ends. . As someone who is a wimp and easily made uncomfortable, I really think it’s saying something that even through the psycho that was unfolding on these pages, it was done in a way that had me hooked as much as horrified. It was just so compulsively readable. I ended up giving up on adulting the morning after I started it because I couldn’t stop thinking about it long enough to get anything done. . I think my favorite thing about this is all the things that are left unsaid throughout the story. Because every clue and every memory shared or admittedly modified is what really leaves this low hanging ominous feel over the story. Yet readers can still fill in the blanks, which adds this extra layer of unease. I even found myself unexpectedly tearing up a couple times near the end. . This read is perfect for this Fall season, perfect for the upcoming Halloween holiday, and really just good reading. I think this will become one that I add to my list of go-to book recommendations when people ask me what to read next. . #thedarkdescentofelizabethfrankenstein #kierstenwhite #bookreview #retelling #fanfiction #frankenstein #maryshelley
