First of all, I have to give huge props to author Katherine J. Chen for taking on a Pride and Prejudice spin off, telling the untold story of Mary Bennett. I haven’t yet read P&P (I keep telling myself this is the year and that I’ll do it via audiobook on good recommendations, but I haven’t yet) but is there anyone who doesn’t know about Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy? . What I mean is P&P is so iconic and so beloved that critics are bound to come into this with their standards high. (and I’m not blaming them, cause I’ve been there with spin-offs of favorites of mine, even when trying to keep an open mind) . Anyway, I kind of thought that I’d be a good audience for “Mary B” since I (THINK) I know enough spoilers from P&P, but am not a huge fan (yet??) of the original tale and characters. I thought maybe I might be an unbiased reviewer. haha. So I requested this review copy from @randomhouse and they kindly gifted it to me. It arrived yesterday (releases on the 24th) so I’ll be jumping in asap. . This story is set before, during, and after the events of “Pride and Prejudice” (I’ll put the synopsis in the comments) and I guess we will find out if this book can be enjoyed by someone who knows little about P&P and how I’ll feel about it after I finally read some Austen. ha. . I’ve been thinking that I accept retellings because it’s a new story by a new author—similar but still other. But I think it’d be harder for me having a new author pick up the same characters in the same world. What about you? Are you able to enjoy these for what they are? Or is it too hard to separate your love for the original tales? . #maryb #katherinejchen #prideandprejudice #janeausten #botanicum #booknerdigans #amreading #bookflatlay #flatlay #flatlaystyle #flatlaylove #bibliophile #alwaysreading #booksofinstagram #whattoread #readmore #bookaddict #instareads
