This review of “The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik” is long overdue. I planned to post it before I went to BEA, but a weird misunderstanding at the library left me without the Bowie book I wanted. And, well, no Bowie, no picture. . Noah Hypnotik makes David Arnold 3 for 3 for me. I absolutely loved “Mosquitoland” and “Kids of Appetite” and I was relieved that I loved Noah. (I know it is unreasonable to expect to love everything any one particular favorite author will write, but I still always hope. ha.) And Noah did not disappoint for me. . I never know how to quite explain what I mean by this, but Arnold’s writing style has this weirdness? to it that makes for hilarious dialogue and casually veils cleverness and smart writing. I find it refreshing, quirky, and fun to read, even as I turn the page and find myself reading something that deeply resonates with me or discover is perfectly relatable. . This book is a contemporary that is toeing the line of sci-fi, as we follow Noah after he gets hypnotized after a party. The book synopsis describes Noah as “Bowie believer, concise historian, disillusioned swimmer, son, brother, friend.” and I honestly think that is one of the best sentences to describe this book. We follow Noah, not only in his bizarre journey post-hypnosis, but truly in his role of son, brother, and friend. . My favorite parts were definitely the concise histories of Noah, where he names one event in history and finds all the connections from that moment that lead back to him. I thought these were RAD and I often immediately reread the entire concise history just because I thought they were fun and clever, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of clever things. . Is this story really weird? Yes. Can I see some people hating it? Totally. But it was totally  up my alley and there are parts of this story (especially the passage about parents trying to prepare a map that will get their kids through to the maze of life) that I know will become part of my regular daily conversation and thoughts. I highly recommend this and hope you enjoy it as much as I did. . #thestrangefascinationsofnoahhypnotik #davidarnold #davidbowie
