Okay, I knew that “To Kill a Kingdom” was going to come in my March @litjoycrate , so I held my review on this book long enough to get my finished copy in my crate AND THEN an additional week so I wouldn’t spoil anyone. SO FINALLY my review…I loved it. 😂 . I love the Little Mermaid, but I still remember, clearly, watching it with my daughter for her first time and realizing that Ariel was only 16 and she basically threw her life away for a Prince she only saw once. (that moment you realize that being a parent actually does change your perspective. haha) So maybe it was with that in mind that reading this fierce retelling was so much more awesome to me. I felt like it defied that storyline for something more. . I love a fierce female and I love a story that puts romance on the back burner. Put those together and I’m interested. I love how this story mirrored elements that we are familiar with from Disney, the original fairy tale, and siren lore—and wove them into a story about humanity, responsibility, and loyalty—not to mention lots of sass. I did get a good laugh out of some of the dialogue. . Since it is a retelling, I feel like detailing out any of the differences spoils it. So I’m basically going to leave it at that. But I enjoyed every part of this. I loved the fierceness of Lira, the sarcasm of Elian, and that there is no insta love no insta love no insta love. . THE END. 4 stars from me. . I enjoyed this take, but I am finding that some of you didn’t. I’d love to hear some of your spoiler free thoughts (or spoiler filled DMs) Have you read it yet? Do you plan to? . #tokillakingdom #alexandrachristo #bookreview #maps #bookflatlay
