The Rules of Magic: 5/5 Stars . It’s been a little while since I’ve formally reviewed a book here, even though I’ve read several. I’ve just felt like my bad reading mood wasn’t making me a reliable reviewer. But this book has easily made it onto my Top 10 of 2017 reads. . If you’re familiar with “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman, then you’ll be happy to know that “The Rules of Magic” is the prequel. Of all the wonderful things I could say about this book, I’ve narrowed it down to two major things that made it a stand out for me. . One: Alice Hoffman has this incredible way of blending magic into an every day setting. I suppose you might call this magical realism, but I didn’t think of it that way for awhile. Magical realism has always been when I accept magic in an environment where it doesn’t fit. Somehow Hoffman took a story about witches and magic and made me believe that it fit in our world as it is. . Two: I experienced not only real emotion from this story, but it was deeply inspiring to me. After following Franny, Jet, and Vincent (and their respective relations) through a lifetime, you have the clear picture of what our choices and fears can make of our lives. I closed this book feeling a renewed desire to be courageous, to love more, fear less, and accept that each and every one of us will live through deep sorrows, much pain, and a multitude of losses—but these should not stop us from loving fiercely. It’s a story about witches, but a lesson on the human experience. . My top take aways are: do no harm, even if you have the capacity. Accept who you are. Choose courage. Love makes life beautiful. . Very much recommend this book. It’s got the weight of responsibility and sorrow, but the levity of whimsy and the fantastical in familiar places. I absolutely loved it and know it will be a book I will read again and again. . Thank you to Simon and Schuster for sending me this very thoughtful package that means so much more now that I’ve read and loved this story. #therulesofmagic #practicalmagic #alicehoffman #bookreview #flatlay #bookflatlay #audubon #fpdbookreview
