Now THIS is an incredible story. And the story to discovering this story is incredible. . This is crazy to me. I'm absolutely fascinated. So! In a very brief nutshell, Queen Victoria became extremely close friends with Abdul Karim and he was her closest confidante. This friendship was frowned upon so much that when she died, her family went to great pains to eradicate all evidence of it. Letters between the two were burned, her journals were altered, etc etc. IT WASNT UNTIL 100 YEARS LATER that the friendship was discovered. . A journalist noticed several paintings of Abdul in the queens summer home and her years of investigation lead her to discover their relationship via Abdul's diaries (which his family had) and the queens work books where she practiced Urdu. This book was written about the long forgotten/erased mother-son relationship these two shared and is now a major motion picture. I was meant to go see a prescreening of the film, but wasn't able to make it. So I'll be heading out this weekend to watch it when it hits theaters. . Honestly, this whole story is fascinating to me. The story of the queen's blatant disregard to all the racism around her and the fact that their friendship was so frowned upon IT WAS ERASED. How amazing that this journalist was able to find it and tell the world about it. . I can't wait to read this book and can't wait to catch the film. Did anyone else know about this story? Or have you already read the book? Anyone else going to see the movie this weekend?
