You know that meme with Umbridge’s face on it? The one that says, “Admit it, you wanted her dead more than Voldemort.”? I always laugh at how true that actually feels some times. . Since we’re celebrating Hogwarts professors this year for #HarryPotterBookNight , I absolutely can’t leave out Dolores Umbridge and how important I think she is to the story. . Sure Harry Potter is a celebrity for the defeat of Lord Voldemort when he was just a baby and he’s defeated Quirrell, the Basilisk, took on loads of Dementors, and dueled Voldemort during the Tri-Wizard Cup, but it still remains that Voldemort had become more of a boogie-man than a pressing threat to the majority of the students. And everyone who could remember the suffering You-Know-Who caused wanted to keep it that way. . Enter Dolores Umbridge as professor of "Defense Against the Dark Arts” . In my opinion, Umbridge and her terrible reign at Hogwarts became one of the first and biggest things that made Hogwarts students realize they had to start thinking for themselves and choosing sides in a very real sense. Her strict teaching of only Ministry Approved THEORY in DATDA was what finally drove the students to form Dumbledore’s Army. Joining the DA was a choice to believe that Voldemort had returned and the students had to take it upon themselves to make sure they were ready. It was rebellion against the Ministry and rebellion against Umbridge and ultimately prepared those students for the battle in the Astronomy Tower and the Battle at Hogwarts. Heroes are made when they rise to meet a Villain, and I think Umbridge, through her prejudice and cruelty, helped draw the clear line for many of the students to decide where they stood. . And lets be real, if Umbridge hadn’t been so awful, the Grand and Spectacular exit of Fred and George Weasley wouldn’t have been nearly as amazing and satisfying to read. ha. To this day, it is still one of the top triumphant moments in Harry Potter canon. . What do you think about Umbridge? Can you name any good that came from her time at Hogwarts?
