Last week “Why We Came to the City” by @kristopherjansma hit the shelves, and I’ve been making my way through my TBR to get to this. . (actually, I read the first couple pages, where Jansma appears to have adapted Henry David Thoreau’s “I went to the woods…” to “Why We Came to the City” and thought it was brilliant.) . The people at @vikingbooks are encouraging people to share their favorite things about their city using the hashtag #whywecametothecity and I think it’s a fun project! I live in Salt Lake City, Utah! I love living here because there are some 100 plus hiking trails all within a 10 mile radius of my home. I love the mountains. I love the snow. I love that @kingsenglishbookshop is near me. (they bring in tons of amazing authors every month and TKE community is super tight!) . Even though Salt Lake is a tiny city, it’s my city and I love it. What do you love about your city? @ursula _uriarte posted about this book today and she’s asking people what brought them to their cities. It’s been fun to read through the comments! Go leave your story there!) . Abbreviated synopsis from Goodreads: Five years after their college graduations, the fiercely devoted friends at the heart of this richly absorbing novel remain inseparable. Amid the cheerful revelry and free-flowing champagne, the friends toast themselves and the new year ahead—a year that holds many surprises in store. They must navigate ever-shifting relationships with the city and with one another, determined to push onward in pursuit of their precarious dreams. And when a devastating blow brings their momentum to a halt, the group is forced to reexamine their aspirations and chart new paths through unexpected losses. Why We Came to the City offers an unforgettable exploration of friendship forged in the fires of ambition, passion, hope and love.
