"A breeze ruffled the neat hedges of Privet Drive, which lay silent and tidy under the inky sky, the very last place you would expect astonishing things to happen. Harry Potter rolled over inside his blankets without waking up. One small hand closed on the letter beside him and he slept on, not knowing he was special, not knowing he was famous, not knowing he would be woken in a few hours’ time by Mrs Dursley’s scream as she opened the front door to put out the milk bottles, nor that he would spend the next few weeks being prodded and pinched by his cousin Dudley ... He couldn’t know that at this very moment, people meeting in secret all over the country were holding up their glasses and saying in hushed voices: ‘To Harry Potter – the boy who lived!’” . This is possibly my favorite paragraph in the entire Harry Potter series. Oh, there are plenty that come in close second, but this one never fails to give me chills. This is the beginning. . Happy Birthday to Harry and JK Rowling today, for making us believe that magic is real. . So today, as I do every year, I’d like to raise my own glass to all the good and true friends I have met because of this fandom, to all the words of this seven book story that have left the boundaries of those tomes and filled many empty and dark spaces in our own stories with magic, strength, and validation that chocolate is a true antidote to hard times. And honestly, all the life lessons aside, just plain fun, magic, and quidditch. . Happy Birthday, Harry—the boy who lived! .
