Tell me about a book that made a deep impression on you. I have a little list of books that take up real space in my brain and I think about them all. the. time. . One of them is Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Plot-wise I actually didn’t love the book very much, even if the way the author made connections between characters was brilliantly done. But the actual premise of the book and a viral apocalypse? You can ask any of my good friends, but I talk about that book with them weekly for the last six years since I read it. . Because of this, I’ve been weirdly eager to read Mandel’s latest offering “The Glass Hotel”, which I am starting today. (Thank you to @aaknopf for gifting me this copy) Despite the way Station Eleven honestly has left me deeply unsettled for the rest of my life, I always crave a book that really impacts me in some way. So, here’s hoping my sanity survives this one! . . Synopsis: Vincent is a bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star glass and cedar palace on an island in British Columbia. Jonathan Alkaitis works in finance and owns the hotel. When he passes Vincent his card with a tip, it's the beginning of their life together. That same day, Vincent's half-brother, Paul, scrawls a note on the windowed wall of the hotel: "Why don't you swallow broken glass." Leon Prevant, a shipping executive for a company called Neptune-Avramidis, sees the note from the hotel bar and is shaken to his core. Thirteen years later Vincent mysteriously disappears from the deck of a Neptune-Avramidis ship. Weaving together the lives of these characters, The Glass Hotel moves between the ship, the skyscrapers of Manhattan, and the wilderness of northern Vancouver Island, painting a breathtaking picture of greed and guilt, fantasy and delusion, art and the ghosts of our pasts. . #theglasshotel #emilystjohnmandel #stationeleven #onthebed #newrelease
